Students encouraged to get reading

The Member for Coomera, Michael Crandon, has called on all Coomera Electorate primary school students not to miss out on registering for the Premier’s Reading Challenge which closes on 8 June.

Mr. Crandon said the Challenge is a great opportunity for students to improve their reading skills and receive recognition for their effort.

The challenge is for every state and non-state school student from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 7 to read 15 books between 22 May and 7 September 2012.

“The challenge is organised into different categories to account for different skill levels and study demands for different ages,” Mr. Crandon said.

“With 2012 designated as the National Year of Reading, the annual challenge takes on special significance this year.

“I can remember discovering the joy of reading as a child, with my favourite books being books of Australian poetry”

 “It’s an enjoyable pastime which, I’m pleased to say, has continued for me on into adulthood.

““I encourage all Queensland primary students to register on the challenge website www.education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge by Friday 8 June 2012.

Last year more than 78,000 Queensland students completed the challenge, reading more than one million books in the process.

 Students who meet the challenge will receive a certificate signed by the Premier. Schools are encouraged to celebrate the achievements of their students during the Premier’s Reading Celebration Weeks from Monday 12 November to Friday 23 November.
